What is an evaporative cooler and how does it work?

An evaporative cooler is a cooling unit that uses the natural principle of water evaporation to lower the air temperature. The unit draws in warm ambient air and passes it through wet pads; as the water evaporates, heat is absorbed and the resulting air can be between 6 and 15 °C cooler than the outside air, around 10 °C under normal conditions according to the BC range data sheet.

Unlike traditional air conditioning, an evaporative cooler uses no refrigerant gases or compressors, which makes it a greener, quieter option with far lower running costs. It also constantly renews the air instead of recirculating it, improving the quality of the working environment.

Which spaces is an industrial evaporative cooler suitable for?

Industrial evaporative coolers are specially designed for large-volume spaces where conventional air conditioning is not viable or is too expensive: industrial and production buildings, mechanical and body repair workshops, warehouses and logistics centres, factories and processing plants, sports facilities and halls, outdoor events and hospitality terraces, and greenhouses and farms.

They are particularly effective in hot, dry climates, making them ideal for much of Spain, especially inland and in the south of the peninsula.

Advantages over traditional air conditioning

Choosing a Blizzcool industrial evaporative cooler brings a number of very tangible operational and financial benefits. Consumption can be up to 80% lower than an air conditioning system of equivalent capacity. Portable models require no building work or drain connection, so installation is immediate. Because they always work with outside air, they eliminate the stuffy atmosphere typical of industrial spaces, and since they use no refrigerant gases, their environmental impact is zero. Finally, with no compressor or gas, maintenance is limited to periodic cleaning of the pads.

How much does an industrial evaporative cooler cost?

The price of an industrial evaporative cooler varies according to the unit’s power, airflow and features. At Blizzcool you will find models for areas from 200 m² up to 395 m² with a single unit, at prices to suit every need. If you are unsure which model best suits your space, the Blizzcool team will advise you with no obligation so you can make the best decision before investing.

Frequently asked questions about evaporative coolers

What is the difference between an evaporative cooler and an air conditioner?

An evaporative cooler cools the air through water evaporation, without compressors or refrigerant gases, so it uses up to 80% less energy. Air conditioning, on the other hand, uses a gas compression cycle to cool the air and works best in fully enclosed spaces. An evaporative cooler is ideal for large, semi-open or ventilated spaces, such as industrial buildings or workshops.

How much energy does an industrial evaporative cooler use?

An industrial evaporative cooler uses between 0.5 and 3 kW/h depending on the model and power. By comparison, an industrial air conditioning unit with similar performance can use between 8 and 15 kW/h. This translates into very significant savings on the electricity bill, especially in spaces that need cooling for many hours a day.

Does an evaporative cooler work in humid climates?

Evaporative coolers are most effective in dry climates, with relative humidity below 60%. In very humid areas the cooling effect is reduced, although the unit is still useful as a forced fresh-air ventilation system. For most of inland Spain (Castile, Aragon, Extremadura, Murcia or inland Valencia) performance is excellent.

What maintenance does an evaporative cooler need?

Maintaining an evaporative cooler is simple and inexpensive. It mainly consists of periodic cleaning of the evaporative pads, checking the water tank and checking the fan. Because it uses no compressor or refrigerant gas, it needs no specialised technical inspections and is not subject to F-Gas regulations, which considerably reduces maintenance costs compared with air conditioning.

How many square metres can an industrial evaporative cooler cover?

It depends on the model and the unit’s airflow. Industrial evaporative coolers in the BC range cover from 200 m² up to 395 m² with a single unit. For very large spaces it is common to combine several strategically placed units. If you are unsure how many units you need for your installation, the Blizzcool team can help you size the solution with no obligation.
