Cooling for logistics centres and warehouses
Ceilings at 10 metres, racking right up to the top, dock doors that never stop opening. A logistics centre builds up heat from solar radiation, the heat load of the lighting and the constant inflow of outside air. Blizzcool units cool and move air in large volumes with no fixed installation, no gases and minimal energy cost.
The heat challenge in a logistics warehouse
A logistics centre combines great ceiling heights with continuous loading and unloading. The metal roof absorbs solar radiation, and the temperature at working level can be 8–12 °C higher than outside during the middle of the day.
Picking areas are the worst affected: operatives work in narrow aisles between racks, with little natural air circulation and constant physical effort that intensifies the feeling of heat.
Conventional air conditioning is not viable at this scale. The volumes are huge, the dock doors open every few minutes and the energy cost would be unaffordable. What is needed is a system that works with the open space and on a large scale.
Energy consumption of an evaporative cooler compared with an air conditioning unit of equivalent capacity.
Common applications
Each area of a logistics warehouse has different conditions. These are the scenarios we deal with most often.
Picking and order preparation areas
Portable evaporative coolers in the working aisles. Fresh air directed straight at operatives without affecting the stored goods.
Loading and unloading docks
Evaporative coolers at the entry points to counteract the mass of hot air that comes in each time a dock door opens.
High-bay storage aisles
HVLS ceiling fans for thermal destratification. They eliminate the pocket of heat that builds up at the top and even out the temperature throughout the building.
Offices and floor control
Portable air conditioners for enclosed areas: on-site offices, break rooms, quality control and administration.
Recommended equipment for logistics
The best combination depends on the floor area, the ceiling height, the number of docks and the intensity of the activity. These are the most common product families.
Why Blizzcool in logistics
Designed to operate with dock doors open
Evaporative cooling works better with natural ventilation. Docks constantly opening and closing are not a problem: they are part of the system.
Covers large areas
A BWP FAM610 HVLS fan covers up to 1,800 m² of floor area. Combined with evaporative coolers, it can cool an entire building.
Minimal energy consumption
An evaporative cooler uses between 0.5 and 1.5 kW. Compared with a conventional air conditioning system, the saving can exceed 80%.
Relocatable to suit the season
Portable units can be moved to wherever they are needed most. In peak season, extra support in picking; off-peak, at the goods-in docks. No building work or fixed installation.
Better team productivity
Lowering the temperature in the work area improves concentration, reduces picking errors and cuts staff turnover during summer peaks.
